FAQs

How often do the cadets have training?

We hold training nights each Thursday night, but cadets will also participate in occasional events and/or trips that may last from a few hours in a morning of the weekend to an overnight weekend training.

We also have a variety of optional (but recommended) teams! They practice on other days of the week and/or month (varying depending on the team’s schedule), including Ground School (Aviation), Band, Drill Team, Range Team, First Aid, Cadet Correspondents, Effective Speaking, and Aviation. They train on other days (not Thursdays). They also participate in occasional weekend practices and competitions.

How often do cadets go flying?

Generally, our squadron goes gliding 2-4 times a year in autumn and spring, and the cadets need to register for them.

Does joining the cadet program mean joining the Canadian Forces?

Not at all! Cadets is a civilian youth organization with ties to the Canadian Forces, but it is not part of the Canadian military.

Are there additional costs that need to be paid for, like uniforms?

Simply put, no, but cadets are expected to assist the squadron in fund-raising activities, such as Tag Days, special parades, etc. The uniforms are loaned to cadets by the Canadian Forces. You are, of course, expected to keep the uniform looking clean and neat though. If there are any additional payments, they will remain optional.

Do cadets get paid?

If cadets attend full-time summer courses, the cadets are given a training bonus as a course cadet, and pay by day as a staff cadet. Nevertheless, it has never been our primary incentive, as cadets receive valuable educational benefits, from day trips to overnight camps, free flying courses, and other expensive opportunities.

Who instructs the cadets?

Most instruction is done by more senior cadets, as we value the idea of cadets lead cadets, but the cadets are guided by officers of the Cadet Instructors Cadre (a component of the Canadian Forces who are specially trained to instruct and supervise youth) and civilian volunteers.

Can cadets become a pilot?

Air Cadets who can pass the required medical and written examinations can qualify for aircraft and glider pilot scholarship courses conducted at flying clubs, schools and special camps across Canada. These courses are very costly outside of air cadets.

Can cadets earn High School credits?

Yes! The BC Ministry of Education recognizes the discipline and training provided by the Cadet program, and BC students who are cadets are eligible to receive up to 12 credits towards their high-school graduation. See the High School Credits page (under Resources) to find out how.
