Teams

Aviation

Throughout the year, cadets will learn a variety of subjects, including aviation, on regular Thursday and Tuesday training nights. Cadets who want to explore the theory, careers, and opportunities in the aviation industry should join ground school. Cadets participating in Ground School gain an opportunity to pursue their interest in aviation through engaging activities. They will learn from experienced senior cadets and officers, which will help them gain the knowledge required to achieve a pilot’s license.

Ground school is divided into two levels of difficulty: Junior Ground School and Senior Ground School. Senior Ground School is for cadets above Proficiency Level 3 and prepares them for the Glider Pilot Exams. Senior Ground School runs from October to January on Tuesdays virtually through Google Meet.

Are you interested in aviation? Are you a junior cadet (level 3 and below)? Would you be interested in learning more about everything aviation-related? If yes, Junior Ground School is the perfect opportunity for you! Junior Ground School will be conducted virtually via Google Meet this year on Mondays from 1830-2100 hrs starting March 4. Please note that you will not be able to be in Junior Ground School, Cadet Correspondents, and Effective Speaking at the same time as the meeting times overlap. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact WO2 Xie or WO2 Urbanczyk.

Band

Do you play an instrument or would you like to learn how to play one? 637’s band is a perfect fit for you! The Hurricane Band Team doubles as a flight with a Drum Major instead of a Flight Commander. Throughout band practices, cadets learn music theory and practical playing as individually and as part of an ensemble. As a marching band, the Hurricane Band not only focuses on musical talent but also marching and drills unique to the band. The team goes to an annual regional band competition in May and has multiple band clinics throughout the year to test and reward musicians with cadet badges for their musical level. Each musical instrument is split accordingly into sections, where senior members guide and teach cadets who are new to their instrument. Any questions can be directed to WO2 Guo or WO2 Qin!

Anyone can join drill team, you can invite your friends who are struggling with drill, or you can meet new people during drill practices! Drill Team builds a special bond between those who do drill and helps them cooperate more collaboratively.

The Drill Team performs at an intense, strict Annual Drill Team Competition where they compete against other squadrons executing a Compulsory (the same) and Precision (unique) drill routine! As part of the Drill Team, there is not only a high standard of drill, but a high standard of personal dress and deportment should also be upheld. A team will eventually be selected of 16 cadets to participate in the Lower Mainland Drill Competition. Any questions regarding the Drill Team can be directed to WO2 Lee or FSgt Huang.

Effective Speaking

Effective Speaking is a fantastic way for cadets to develop confidence in their public speaking skills and to gain practice with their peers! Cadets are taught the necessary tools and strategies in speech delivery, speech writing, and impromptu speaking. Effective Speaking will also help cadets enrich their personal development through growing their communication skills. Public speaking is a highly valued skill in cadets, and can also be utilised in school and other future endeavours.

Cadets in Effective Speaking have the opportunity to display their skills by participating in several levels of competition throughout the training year: Squadron, Wing, and National. At the regional Effective Speaking competition, they are given topics to compose impromptu speeches around. As well as competitions, cadets in Effective Speaking are also given the opportunity to be a Master of Ceremonies (MC) at parades and celebrations, including the Annual Ceremonial Review and Remembrance Day. Inquires to FSgt Su.

First Aid is an amazing opportunity for cadets to gain crucial life skills along with developing critical thinking skills, confidence, and teamwork. Cadets may also have the opportunity to receive an Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid Certification. First Aid is emergency help given to an injured or suddenly ill person by using readily available materials. The purpose of First Aid is to minimize further injury and help others in need. First Aid is typically taught by an experienced group of seniors who have been on the team for a few years. Some have competed in First Aid competitions, while others have First Aid knowledge through other backgrounds such as lifeguarding or St. John Ambulance. Inquiries to WO2 Qin.

Cadets are able to enhance their expertise through organized competitions by practicing their speed, strength, and accuracy. Seniors take turns operating the range to practice their leadership and organizational abilities. Cadets are able to earn their marksmanship level badges via the range team by measuring the accuracy of their exercises. Inquries to FSgt Favaro.

Sports

Covering a multitude of sports teams from basketball to volleyball,  we welcome players of a wide range of skill and fitness levels to participate as a team member. Our sports teams run for the full year with various competitions hosted by squadrons within the lower mainland. Practices are held weekly (depending on the sport) where cadets practice many skills, drills, and exercises. Sports teams are a great way to get involved within the squadron and build team and leadership skills. In 2022, our basketball team played very well in local squadron basketball tournaments! Cadets can step up and volunteer to lead practices and interact with cadets outside of regular training nights. Cadets are expected to show up to practice to show effort, enthusiasm, and team spirit. Inquiries should be directed to FSgt Hussin.

Cadet Correspondents

The Cadet Correspondents team is responsible for the communications of the squadron, including the social media pages, the newsletter, and even this very website! This is the perfect team for cadets who are interested in journalism, graphic design, photography, and so much more. Since 2021, the team has been curating a yearbook as an end-of-training-year gift to each cadet in our squadron. If you would like to know more about this team, please speak to FSgt Huang.
